How to Care for Your Cotton T-Shirts

How to Care for Your Cotton T-Shirts

A great T-shirt should be something you reach for again and again.

But even good cotton needs a little care. The way you wash, dry and store your T-shirts can make a difference to how they look and feel over time.

Here are a few simple habits to keep your favourites in great shape.

1. Turn Printed T-Shirts Inside Out

Before putting your T-shirt in the washing machine, turn it inside out.

This reduces the amount of rubbing the printed surface experiences during washing and helps keep the artwork looking fresh.

It's a small habit that can make a difference over repeated washes.

2. Wash With Similar Colours

Keep your laundry organised:

  • Whites with whites
  • Dark colours with darks
  • Similar colours together

This helps reduce colour transfer and keeps your T-shirts looking their best.

For a new or particularly bright garment, washing it separately the first time is a sensible precaution.

3. Don't Overdo the Heat

Excessive heat isn't a cotton T-shirt's best friend.

High temperatures can contribute to:

  • Shrinkage
  • Fading
  • Fabric wear
  • Changes in shape

The safest approach is to follow the care instructions on your garment label and use the recommended temperature.

For everyday washing, avoid unnecessarily high temperatures.

4. Give Your Prints Some Extra Care

Printed T-shirts need a little more attention.

Remember:

Turn inside out → Wash according to the care label → Avoid excessive heat → Handle gently

When ironing, don't place a hot iron directly over the printed design.

And avoid aggressive scrubbing around the artwork when dealing with stains.

5. Let Your T-Shirt Dry Properly

Whenever practical, allow cotton T-shirts to air dry rather than exposing them to excessive dryer heat.

After washing:

Straighten the garment → Smooth the seams → Hang or lay flat to dry

Don't leave damp T-shirts sitting in the washing machine for hours. Apart from unpleasant odours, prolonged dampness isn't good for the garment.

6. Don't Use Too Much Detergent

More detergent doesn't necessarily mean cleaner clothes.

Use the amount recommended for your washing machine and load size. Excess detergent can remain in the fabric and affect how it feels.

Your T-shirt doesn't need a chemistry experiment every time it goes into the wash. 🙂

7. Store Them the Right Way

Make sure your T-shirts are completely dry before storing them.

For frequently worn T-shirts, folding is an easy way to avoid unnecessary stretching around the shoulders.

If you prefer hanging them, use hangers that don't distort the neckline.

Before washing: Turn printed T-shirts inside out.

During washing: Follow the garment's care label.
